Kuma makes history in flashing vintage form

Remember a time — brief, but existent, all the same — when it wasn’t totally crazy to suggest that the best pitcher on the Seattle Mariners was somebody other than Felix Hernandez? That time was 2013, specifically. Hisashi Iwakuma — the man who in Wednesday’s 3-0 win over the O’s became just the second Japanese pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the Majors — was a revelation that year, just his second season stateside.

Gomez rests knee after spectacular catch

Astros center fielder Carlos Gomez is dealing with a swollen and sore right knee after banging it into the wall while making a tremendous catch in the first inning of Tuesday’s loss to the Giants. He was out of the starting lineup Wednesday for the first time since the Astros acquired him via trade.

What a home run! All 15 home teams win

The Mariners’ walk-off victory over the Orioles on Tuesday night capped an unprecedented slate in Major League Baseball. For the first time in the league’s history, all 15 home teams won on the same day. Prior to Tuesday, the closest the home teams have ever come was 12 wins more than a century ago, on May 23, 1914, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

Gomez robs Giants with stupendous catch

Astros center fielder Carlos Gomez made the kind of catch in the first inning of Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to the Giants that would make George Springer jealous. Gomez, starting his 11th consecutive game in center field since being acquired in a trade with the Brewers last month, made a leaping grab at the wall to rob Matt Duffy of what possibly could have been a home run, if not at least extra bases.

Franco bruises wrist, unsure when he’ll return

Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco suffered a bruised left wrist in the first inning of Tuesday night’s 13-1 loss to Arizona at Chase Field. D-backs right-hander Jeremy Hellickson drilled Franco with a fastball, and Franco collapsed to the turf behind home plate, grabbing his wrist before being helped off the field. Fortunately for Franco and the Phils, X-rays came back negative.
