Rockies’ pitching prospects are on a tear

Triple-A Albuquerque right-hander Jeff Hoffman and Double-A Hartford left-handers Kyle Freeland and Harrison Musgrave, and Hartford righties Antonio Senzatela and German Marquez — all of whom went to Rockies Spring Training — have a combined 1.55 ERA with 76 strikeouts against 27 walks, and 82 hits against in 116 1/3 innings.

Erlin needs Tommy John surgery

The Padres’ worst fears regarding left-hander Robbie Erlin were realized on Tuesday, when an MRI exam on his left elbow revealed a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament. Erlin will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the 2016 season, along with, most likely, the start of ’17.

McCullers may join Astros in Boston

Lance McCullers could rejoin the Astros’ rotation sooner rather than later. McCullers, who’s scheduled to make a Minor League rehab start for Triple-A Fresno at El Paso on Saturday, could return during next week’s road series in Boston, manager A.J. Hinch said.

Harper: A lot to learn from Negro Leaguers

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper is considered a sports-history aficionado, and on Wednesday, he went to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City to be presented with the museum’s Josh Gibson and Oscar Charleston Legacy Awards for being the National League home run leader and NL MVP Award winner last season.
