Elbow tightness cuts Billingsley’s sharp start short

The Phillies signed Chad Billingsley to a one-year contract in January because they considered it low risk, high reward. It was low risk because if Billingsley, who left Saturday night’s 3-1 victory over the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park with elbow tightness after five scoreless innings, could not pitch effectively following a pair of right elbow surgeries, they had committed only $1.5 million.

McClendon expects perfection from Iwakuma

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon didn’t blink when he laid out his expectations for Hisashi Iwakuma after Seattle’s 4-3 win over the Yankees on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. Never mind the right-hander is just three starts removed from an 11-week stretch on the disabled list. McClendon expects perfection, starting immediately.

Dodgers agree with Buehler; Funkhouser back to school

The Dodgers will sign Vanderbilt right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler, the No. 24 overall pick, a source told MLB.com’s Jim Callis. However, Louisville righty Kyle Funkhouser, the No. 35 pick, revealed via Twitter that he will return to school instead. The club has not confirmed Buehler’s deal nor commented on Funkhouser’s Tweet.
