Mets rout Braves to recapture Wild Card spot

The Mets had more important matters on their minds Sunday than exorcising the ghosts of Turner Field, which have haunted them for the better part of two decades. In the thick of a skin-tight National League Wild Card race, the Mets simply needed a win. Yoenis Cespedes clubbed a grand slam for his 30th homer and Seth Lugo contributed seven standout innings, moving the Mets a half-game in front of St. Louis for the NL’s second Wild Card spot.

With three weeks to go, Yanks like schedule

To feel the minor disappointment in the Yankees’ clubhouse Sunday afternoon was to appreciate just how far this team has come in the last week, and a testament to the position its played itself into. There is a slight sense, after a 4-2 loss to the Rays, of missed opportunity. Going forward, an overwhelming majority of the Yankees’ games will come against teams with winning records, many still positioned slightly ahead of New York in the standings.

Cespedes rockets grand slam for 30th HR

As the Mets shoot up the National League standings down the stretch, much credit has gone to their patchwork rotation, to Asdrubal Cabrera and Curtis Granderson, and to the club’s overall ability to take advantage of an easy schedule. Yet it’s worth noting that through everything, Yoenis Cespedes is catching fire again, too.
