Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel threw from the main mound at Fenway Park on Monday, marking his first side session since undergoing left knee surgery July 9. The righty has made such encouraging progress that there’s a chance he could be activated during the upcoming West Coast trip that starts in Anaheim on Thursday and ends at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 7.

Does Aroldis spell relief in Cubs’ quest?

Theo Epstein and the Cubs have agreed to a deal to acquire left-hander Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees, a source told MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez. The clubs have not confirmed. It’s the kind of move the Cubs have been putting themselves in position to make for a couple years. They’ve gotten themselves in a strong position, and now they’re pushing their chips to the middle of the table.

Velasquez, Volquez reportedly on Rangers’ radar

Texas was linked Monday to Phillies right-hander Vince Velasquez and Royals right Edinson Volquez. MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reported the Rangers’ interest in Velasquez, while the Dallas Morning News reported the club’s front-office inner circle watched Volquez on Sunday. Morosi reported the price to acquire Velasquez would be high. The Rangers have not commented on the reports.
