Votto’s mere presence in lineup benefits Reds

While Joey Votto will probably continue to maintain he is 100 percent if he’s in the Reds’ lineup, the first baseman’s balky left leg is clearly not. Manager Bryan Price has often said Votto is less than 100 percent since he returned from a left quadriceps strain near his knee. But it’s become clear that a Votto at 70-75 percent in the lineup is better than no Votto at all.

NL West race illustrates the unique drama of MLB

Through May, the San Francisco Giants mostly streaked. They even flirted with going uncontested atop their division through September, in search of a third world championship in five seasons. In contrast, the Los Angeles Dodgers were a mess, but that was before the calendar flipped to June — and then the Giants were a mess, and the Dodgers mostly streaked.

Brantley’s rocket arm part of overall development

As the baseball dropped toward the glove of a charging Michael Brantley in the fourth inning of Tuesday’s 10-3 win in Los Angeles, Dee Gordon tagged up at third base and prepared for a sprint to the plate. It was a shallow fly ball off the bat of Adrian Gonzalez, but deep enough to tempt Gordon to test Brantley’s power and precision. Runners have been making that mistake all season long.
