A.J. Burnett was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with a right calf strain that had already prompted the Pirates to scratch him from his scheduled start Friday. That opened up a spot on the active 25-man roster for Charlie Morton, while veteran right-hander Jose Contreras was given his unconditional release to clear room on the 40-man roster.
