In an era in which pitching is once again dominating baseball — and free-agency dollars — it’s worth debating the top starting pitchers in the Major Leagues. There’s no shortage of aces in the game today, including a wide array of Cy Young Award winners and a superstar who was the National League’s MVP Award winner just two seasons ago.

On Jan. 22, 2003 — exactly 13 years ago today — the Red Sox made a move that wasn’t considered all that significant. It was on that day that they signed David Ortiz, a 27-year-old DH who had just been non-tendered by the Twins, to a one-year deal worth $1.25 million. No one could have known it at the time, but it was a move that would change the course of Boston baseball history.
