Wil Myers has spent this spring getting accustomed to the new title of first baseman and — more importantly — getting comfortable with the nuances of his new position. He’s often one of the first players on the Padres’ main practice field, taking ground balls and working on positioning and footwork with coaches Glenn Hoffman and Eddie Rodriguez.

Behind early outburst, France ousts Spain

Buoyed by a big first-inning rally, France defeated Spain, 5-3, on Friday afternoon at Rod Carew Stadium to revive its hopes in the Panama City pool of the World Baseball Classic qualifier. With the loss, Spain was eliminated in its bid to reach its second consecutive Classic final. France will try to keep its tournament hopes going on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET, when it faces the loser of Friday night’s Colombia-Panama matchup. The winner of that Saturday contest will face the Colombia-Panama winner on Sunday at 7 looking to win the pool and earn a trip to the Classic. Players, execs address LaRoche situation

Three days after the sudden retirement of Adam LaRoche and a subsequent heated closed-door exchange between White Sox players and executive vice president Kenny Williams, ace left-hander Chris Sale met with the media for roughly 15 minutes on Friday to clarify his frustration regarding the situation.
