De Leon’s emotions on surface in MLB debut

The parade of impressive Dodgers rookie starters continued Sunday with the Major League debut of Jose De Leon, who delivered as an organization’s top pitching prospect should. Mets continue tradition of first-responder caps

As has become their tradition in early September, the Mets on Sunday wore caps during batting practice to commemorate New York’s first-responder agencies from the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Sunday marked the club’s final home game before Sept. 11, though the Mets will also wear the caps during batting practice next Sunday in Atlanta.

Bat pack: Mean Martin, Jays’ lead swinger

The Blue Jays were on the verge of being swept out of the Sunshine State until the club rallied for two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to steal a victory away from the Rays. Russell Martin hit the go-ahead home run in the top of the eighth and second baseman Devon Travis picked up a key two-run single as Toronto pulled out a 5-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Tropicana Field.

Buchholz stepping in for Wright on Tuesday

Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright will not make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Padres as he continues to feel the symptoms of a right shoulder injury sustained while running the bases last month against the Dodgers — an injury growing more worrisome by the day. Clay Buchholz will start instead.
