As deadline nears, Axford unlikely to be tendered

The Cardinals entered the offseason with six arbitration-eligible players. Two — David Freese, Fernando Salas — have since been traded. Another (Rob Johnson) was taken off the 40-man roster last month. That leaves the Cardinals with three more tender decisions, all of which must be made by Monday’s 10:59 pm CT deadline. Outfielder Jon Jay and infielder Daniel Descalso are arbitration-eligible for the first time. Reliever John Axford is in his second year of arbitration eligibility.

Flowers hopes to stay planted behind plate in Chicago

It’s almost impossible for Tyler Flowers to make a completely accurate guess as to whether he’ll be tendered a contract by the 10:59 p.m. CT deadline to do so on Monday night. But with the White Sox already having had preliminary contractual talks with the catcher’s camp in an attempt to avoid arbitration, Flowers believes the odds are at least 50-50 — if not a little bit better.

Kendrick among Phils waiting for contract offers

The Phillies fly south to Orlando, Fla., next Sunday for the Winter Meetings, but they have things to do beforehand. They have until 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday to offer contracts to their five players eligible for salary arbitration: right-hander Kyle Kendrick, center fielder Ben Revere, left-hander Antonio Bastardo, infielder Kevin Frandsen and outfielder John Mayberry Jr.

Nolasco, Hughes additions point Twins in right direction

Brad Radke was never on the cover of Sports Illustrated. His teams in Minnesota never made it to the World Series. But unlike the last three seasons, playing against the Twins in those years was about as much fun as a basement flood. By signing Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes, that’s an experience that general manager Terry Ryan and manager Ron Gardenhire are committed to recreating.
