Indians pounce on Ubaldo; Kluber helps blank O’s

Gio throws on flat ground without discomfort
Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez threw on flat ground for the first time since he was placed on the disabled list this past Sunday because of left shoulder inflammation. He threw for only a few minutes, but didn’t complain about discomfort in the shoulder.

The Cardinals placed left-hander Kevin Siegrist on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday with a left forearm strain and recalled lefty Sam Freeman from Triple-A Memphis.

Call overturned as Red Sox win challenge
With a five-run rally already in progress in the top of the first inning Saturday, Red Sox manager John Farrell didn’t want to see it end. David Ross was ruled out at first on a close play, but Farrell was quick to come out for a challenge. The play was overturned after a delay of one minute, three seconds.

Carlos Gonzalez was out of the lineup for a third consecutive game on Saturday due to swelling in his left index finger, but Rockies manager Walt Weiss said the outfielder would be available to pinch-hit against the Braves.
Rockies recall Rutledge after losing Arenado to DL
The Rockies placed third baseman Nolan Arenado on the disabled list on Saturday and recalled Josh Rutledge from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Arenado suffered a mallet fracture in his left middle finger in Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Braves and will miss at least a month.

But after having a chance to calm down and evaluate how Johnson handled the embarrassing consequences, Gonzalez put his third baseman back in the lineup for Saturday afternoon’s game against the Rockies.
Negro Leaguers honored with Tribute Game
Saturday’s game against the Rangers was the Tigers’ 20th annual Negro Leagues Tribute Game. Both teams wore uniforms from that era, with Detroit representing that city’s Stars franchise and Texas representing the Fort Worth Black Panthers.
