Cards ride Holliday’s bat to top of NL Central

After five months and 136 games, the Cards will enter September positioned precisely as hoped. They are again co-leaders in the National League Central. A little less than two hours after stunning the Cubs with a come-from-behind, 9-6 win, the Cardinals moved into a tie with the Brewers, who were blown out in San Francisco. Matt Holliday homered, drove in four runs and hit the game-winner.

Yadi, Hinske peacemakers in misunderstanding

John Lackey understands Spanish well enough to know what Starlin Castro was saying, but didn’t grasp that the Cubs’ shortstop was mad at himself, not at the Cardinals pitcher. Castro was upset after he flew out to center to end the fourth inning Sunday, and he yelled something in Spanish. Lackey took exception to what was said, and Cubs first-base coach Eric Hinske and Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina had to be peacemakers.

Recker delivers big blow to help Mets win series

For a moment Sunday afternoon at Citi Field — before the Mets finished off the Phillies, 6-5 — one Anthony Recker swing in the sixth inning eased the pains of a difficult season in Queens, his bat colliding with an A.J. Burnett breaking ball that never really broke, the ball soaring through the humid August air until it landed a half-dozen rows back in left field.

Bautista homers in fifth straight game

Jose Bautista has moved within one of the Blue Jays’ franchise record for most consecutive games with a home run. He homered during the sixth inning of Sunday afternoon’s 4-3 victory over the Yankees. It marked the fifth straight game in which Bautista homered, and history is now within his sights.
